Joey, 44, had a cholesterol problem about a year ago. Since then, he’s been working out and has brought his levels down to a manageable level. Now, he wants to extend his regimen with supplements, and is wondering what the best one is to take.
Joey, I hate most dietary supplements! You really never know what you’re taking when you consume them. Supplements are not considered medications, so the FDA doesn’t regulate how they’re made and advertised. They’re actually classified as food, but a lot of times, manufacturers throw in testosterone and other hormones into these powders that you don’t even know about.
The healthiest way to build your body or lose weight is to eat food to maintain a nutritional balance. That means a good balance of protein, carbs, and fats. According to the American Dietetic Association, if you weigh 187 lbs., you should only be consuming about 75 grams of protein per day. To put that number in perspective, a hamburger contains about 50 grams of protein. So if you’ve eaten two of these in a day, you’re eating too much protein. If you’re relying on supplements as a food replacement (which a lot of body builders do), then you’re actually starving your body in order to lose weight.
Let me give you a daily food regimen that will work better than supplements. In the morning, eat multi-grain bread, and pasteurized egg whites. Eating these foods is one of the easiest ways to get protein into your system, along with plenty of other essential nutrients, without consuming all the cholesterol.
Remember, the easiest way to lose weight is not by lifting heavy weights. If you’re serious about losing weight, you’ll be better off with resistance training anyway. This type of workout actually increases your testosterone more than heavy weight training. So, eat eggs, fruit, nuts, and vegetables and perform a light workout a couple times a week. You’ll feel much better eating real food rather than eating processed supplements, and you’ll see much better results in your workout.
