Sex not only brings physical pleasure and babies, it is also necessary for improved health. A study released in 2004 found men who have sex more often are at a reduced risk of developing prostate cancer.
Dr. Fisch speaks with board certified family health practitioner Dr. Walter Gaman about how sex keeps you alive longer. Dr. Walter Gaman is the author of Stay Young: 10 Proven Steps to Ultimate Health. For more on Dr. Walter Gaman, visit www.emtexas.com.
Dr. Fisch: You wrote a book about the health benefits found in the bedroom. Tell me about that.
Dr. Gaman: The book is manual-style about different steps people can do to improve their health. Chapter 8 is titled “Have Sex Often.”
Fisch: That’s absolutely right. It’s better than jogging. Who needs to jog when you can just have sex? I think everybody should be having more sex. One of the things that’s really interesting that just came out in a study is that the more you have sex, the less of a chance you have of developing prostate cancer.
Gaman: That’s right.
Fisch: One of the things I want to talk about, that I talked about in my book Size Matters, is how often people should have sex. Let’s say you’re 50-years-old.
Gaman: 2 to 3 times per week. You’re not in the grave at age 50.
Fisch: That’s exactly right. People should try having sex every single day. Make it a part of their routine.
Gaman: As you probably already know, an exciting area of medicine right now is the telomeres, the bits of DNA at the end of chromosomes. When telomeres shorten, people age. They shorten because of a bad diet, lack of exercise, heart disease, etc. But one of the things that keeps it long is frequent sex.
Fisch: I didn’t know that. That’s amazing! So it’s possible that the more you have sex, the longer you’ll live.
Gaman: It’s nature’s way of getting you out of here. If you’re not going to reproduce, adios.
Fisch: That’s a great way of looking at it.
In Dr. Gaman’s book, he writes that having vigorous sex three times a week for a year is the caloric equivalent of walking for 75 miles. The book features an orgasm chart where people can chart how often they orgasm so they can see how often they’re really having sex. If you’re not having sex frequently, you should have your testosterone checked immediately because it can be an indicator of low testosterone. I tell couples who aren’t having sex enough to schedule it in on their calendars. Pencil-in Monday and Thursday if they have to. And if you’re by yourself, not in a relationship and not having sex, you’re going to die younger. Married men live longer than single men. You’re here on this earth to have sex, so you should be doing it.
