When it comes to sex, the only foolproof way to stay HIV-free is abstinence, refraining from vaginal, oral, or anal sex. If that’s not an option, using male or female condoms can significantly decrease your risk.
Condoms keep your partner’s potentially infected semen and vaginal fluid out of your body and away from any open cuts in the genital region or in and around your mouth. Natural skin condoms no NOT protect against HIV because they contain small pores. The pores are small enough to block sperm from passing, but the HIV virus is so small that it easily passes though the pores, leading to infection.
You can contract HIV from oral sex, too, so use a condom or dental dam if you suspect your partner may be infected.
