Can one man’s sperm be more “potent” than another’s?

Can one man’s sperm be more “potent” than another’s? Does the “swimming” ability of each man’s sperm differ? Is there any way to tell?

Harry’s advice:

Absolutely. The medical term is “motility”. Guys whose sperm swim like junior Olympians have high motility. The guys with couch-potato sperm have low motility. The sperm made in men with small testicles tend to have lower motility and other abnormalities, in addition to having fewer sperm overall.

One common source of low motility is a varicocele – a set of enlarged veins that causes the testicles to heat up, decreasing sperm production. Men with significant varicoceles sometimes have one testicle smaller than the other. Men with varicoceles can also have “low-hanging fruit.” These can all be signs of problems with a guy’s fertility.
